Day and night is fundamentally caused by two factors: first, the nearest star (called, the Sun), a large sphere fusing hydrogen into helium and in the process producing tremendous quantities of light and secondly, the rotating Earth.

The phenomena off day and night on all planets, not just the Earth, is caused by the planet's rotation on its axis as it orbits the sun. The part of the planet facing the sun is day, and part facing away from the sun is night.

The rotation of the earth. The sun appears to rise and set as the earth spins. This happens over a 24 hour period.
