Fluid builds up in the spaces that produce the cerebrospinal fluid and gets trapped creating cysts which in turn sometimes get infected. It is usually caused by abnormal folding of the epithelium lining of the choroid plexus and that is what traps fluid and debris. These cysts can occur on either side of the brain.
