Overwatering is a common cause of leaf discoloration. Other considerations would include lack of sunlight, lack of nutrients, decrease in temperature, inadequate drainage. Insects and other pests are also high on the list. It is also possible that your rubber plant merely needs a larger pot.

There is a good possibility that these browned leaves are due to them being under-watered. Or youo have a very fast draining soil that is not capable of retaining much soil. If the plant has some round brown spots, then inspect it for holes, this might be an indication that there is an insect problem.

The Ficus may have brown leaves due to lack of sunlight or change in sunlight, because the plant is very finicky about it's sunlight. Also the usual culprits of insects or over watering may also cause brown leaves. If the plant is over watered the soil will stink like rotten plants and you must re-pot the plant.
