A failure in the electronic cathode gun in the tube of the monitor or a failure in the synchronization circuits. When this happens its time to get a LCD screen. But to test this out first, substitute another LCD screen into the computer to make sure that its the monitor and not the computer.

A striped computer screen can happen due to faulty or cracked LCD screens, regular monitors, expanded video cards and loose VGA cables.

If it is occurring on a standard CRT (regular monitor) then it could be caused by a loose VGA cable, faulty Video card or maybe the screen needs to be degaussed. If it is an LCD then it may be cracked. Test the screen on a different computer if possible.

There are 2 reasons why you have a striped computer screen. 1st, check your monitor connection to confirm it's connected fully. Otherwise, you may have a video card malfunction.
