Soda is carbonated by means of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) that is under pressure. When the cap is taken off or the can is opened, it allows the CO2 to be released into the atmosphere, which is what causes all the bubbles. Soda goes flat once all the CO2 has escaped.

The fizz in soda is caused by co2. When you open a bottle co2 comes out of the liquid. It continue to come out leaving a flat soda behind.
