some cats are picky. if the litter box isnt clean and tidy, they may choose to find another place to poop. they also like to relieve themselves in the dirt of house plants. watch out for that.

There are many reasons besides a unclean box. The litter box might be too close to the cat's food or not in a private enough space.

This can happen if the cat litter tray is in an area the cat is unhappy about using for toiletting,if the tray is not being cleaned often enough or if the cat is unhappy with the type of litter being used or the type of litter tray being used. It may also be because the tray is to small.

It could be simply bad aim if the cat is using it to pee in. Maybe the smell or the confined space is doesn't like, or maybe the opposite.
