Magnetic disk storage started with tapes similar to audio tapes. Those were slow and hard to use, though the tape backup systems of today still use a similar method. The medium quickly changed to fixed disks. Increasing density is resulting in more storage space.

It started from small idea, then the idea became bigger and bigger, they invinted the large one then small one with larger capacity. Nowadays it is completely uncomon to find someone still use the magnetic disk. In fact the CD, DVD, USB memory drives and external HD and many other tools replaced the small capacity floppy disk.

Magnetic disk storage like the HDD is quickly becoming outdated since we now have much faster transfer-rates with flash memory which I predict will take over 6-8 years from now.
