Plessy v. Ferguson was heard by the US Supreme Court in 1896. It was a landmark decision as it upheld racial segregation as legal under the U.S. Constitution. As a result, the "separate but equal" doctrine was maintained. It remained in place in U.S. law until its the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education.

Plessy vs. Ferguson stemmed from the segregation laws of Louisana. The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1896 which upheld racial segregation in public places under the "separate but equal" doctrine. That doctrine remained in effect until the U.S. Supreme Court overturned it in 1954.

The Supreme Court decided Plessy V. Ferguson by a 7-1 margin in 1896. David Josiah Brewer did not participate in the case. The ruling upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation.
