To subtract square roots, without using deciomals, they must have the same base. So, root(32) - root(8) = 4 root(2) - 2 root(2) = 2 root(2).

Taking the square root of a number x is how one finds a number y which, when multiplied by itself equals the number x. Subtracting an amount from another amount is virtually taking away that amount. If negative y is subtracted from negative x then the answer is the negative sum of x and y.

Well, when you want to subtract square roots, you have to make sure that the root inside is the same as the root you want to subtract from. For example 2 root 2 minus 4 root 32. You want to make sure that the root inside, so you have to simply. It would be 2rt2 - 8rt2= -6rt2.
