Pruning Japanese maple trees is a difficult task. It should be done usually in the summer. But if you are a beginner it would be best for you to prune in the late fall.

It will probably be easiest for you to prune during the winter, when your tree has no leaves. January or early February is suggested, as pruning during December may encourage insects and disease. Do not prune in spring, when the sap is rising. Take care not to prune too much in one season, which will lead to suckering branches.

If you're going to prune your Japanese maple tree, you'll need some good pruning shears and some bleach. Find any weak, damaged branches and prune them close to the trunk first. Dip the shears in bleach after each cut to stop transferring disease to other branches.

Light pruning should be done during the spring. However, if you need to do a lot of pruning, aim for late fall or early spring.

Well make sure you prune the tree on fertilized soil as it will help the tree grow bigger and longer.
