Question by  Bashir (19)

What can you tell me about Helen Keller and her ability to ride a horse?

I am doing a research paper on Helen Keller, I know that she was able to achieve many things but have found no mention of her riding a horse.

She learned how to ride a horse despite her disabilities. A good horse generally won't take you anywhere that is dangerous so it was possible for her to ride.

She may have been able to sit on a horse while being guided by another person, or that she could have ridden with another person, but riding a horse independently is like driving a car and would require a sighted rider. I think more has been written about Keller's intellectual prowess that her physical or athletic abilities.

Helen Keller's mentor Miss Sullivan taught her to learn new things by touching things. Helen managed to pick up many physical activities such as riding, rowing and swimming.

Helen Keller was more than a leader in the development of tools for the blind. She never allowed her handicap to stop her from doing anything that other could do. Among her accomplishments were here equestrian skills on her horse Black Beauty.
