Arthropathy means disease of a joint and the facets are the small joints in the vertebra that allow minimal movement. As these joints break down you will find loss of movement (bad) and spinal nerve impingment (worse). It can usually be diagnosed with a lumber series (xrays).

Facets are located in the spinal column region , the posterior region. It is where the two vertebrae join together along the facets. Degenerative atrophy is when the joints deteriorate , and become smaller. This mainly causes arthritis in the area , effecting the facets in the spinal column. The main cause is simply degeneration which occurs later in life.

The lumbar facets, which are at the edges of the vertebral bodies, are subjected to constant wear and tear through the years. When this wear and tear results in loss of cartilage, the joint undergoes destruction.
