What the noise sounds like, and what type of transmission you have are very important. If it is a clunking noise between shifts or when engaging the transmission, it is probably on its way out. A whining sound could mean the clutch or a lack of lubricant somewhere (transmission fluid if an automatic).

Sorry but Dodge Caliber trannies are noisy. If the noise is a high piercing scream this is pretty normal for this car and can be ignored. However if a clunking sound is also present then load that dog with a mixture of sawdust and trannie fluid and get to a car lot as quickly as possible.
