These tortoises eat a fruit-heavy diet, lots of meat, and almost no grasses. They like tropical fruits and worms in particular. They like very high humidity of around 90% and warm tempertures but no more than 95-100 degrees. They need about 100 square inches per inch of shell length as a habitat.

Forest-hinged tortoises will do best in a high-humidity and warm enviroment, such as a 75 gallon terrarium. The tortoise should have access to a shallow water dish and food such as flies or crickets.

Forest hinge-backed tortoises usually live in areas that are warm and humid, such as the tropical forests of western Africa. The name derives from their shell, which protects them from predatory attacks. They grow to be 7-12 inches long, enjoy water, hibernate, and will die if kept in cold temperatures.
