The Cotez guitar is an eight string guitar that is usually found as an orchestral piece. It was so named for the famous spanish Guitarist Antionio Cotez. The Cotez is a beautiful instrument but not as easy to play as a Gibson or Morander model. They usually range in price from $1000-$5000.

Like all custom guitars they have an individual sound and cannot be compared to many other types of guitars. They are not a company that has had problems with quality. Good guitar.

Cotez would be important because its from that moniker that today's Cort brand derived, in abbreviated form. The Cotez barand was given to a line of good-quality Martin style dreadnoughts manufactured in japan by the Hiyashi factory. Westheimer dispatched some of his staff to visit the factory and work with them to develop the product, results the Cotezes.

I think the original Cortez guitars were made by a Japanese company - started around the 1960s. I don't think the company exists anymore and stopped production just before 1990. The spanish sounding name is because acoustic guitars those days were called Spanish guitars and most companies chose spanish names!

Interesting facts the Rejoice! I believe the modern guitar company Cort is a spin off from the name Cortez!  add a comment

Do you have one? They aren't easy to get - especially well maintained ones. The great thing about them is that they sound better with age! Quite a few Cortez owners are addicted to their guitars and say that the sound and feel are not seen in any other guitars.

A Cotez guitar is made by a company that one of the first guitar builders, Jack Westheimer, was involved in. Jack Westheimer is one of the pioneers in guitar making.
