For most strained back injuries, resting the affected muscles (usually by laying down) for a few days, icing the affected areas for 20 minutes every hour during the first 48 hours, then heat the affected area every 15 mintues every hour for a couple more days. If that doesn't help, then you probably have a worse injury than a strain.

You can take an anti inflammatory medication such as Aleve or Motrin. You may want to rest it and do things that doesn't hurt it. You cna ice it for 20 to 40 minutes every 2 to 4 hours up to 48 hours after the strain occurred. You should do the same for heat if the pain happened gradually

First of all, you might want to visit your doctor to confirm that your back is only strained and it's not something more serious. A doctor might also be able to give you a prescription for painkillers or muscle relaxants while your injury heals. They can refer you to a physical therapist too.

Your doctor should be consulted for a back injury. Most doctors tell you that bed rest for a few days will help. For pain you can take aspirin or a substitute.

The best way to heal a strained back is resting the back muscles, and avoiding heavy lifting until it is healed.
