I am not sure about some homemade concoction, but there are plenty of options available off-the-shelf. They are usually very toxic acids that try to burn away the waste that is causing the clog. Its pretty nasty stuff, and you are probably better off using a plumbing snake.
Removing a clog physically is always better than using a chemical solution. They now make new types of plungers that move much larger volumes of water than the old rubber kind. Make sure that your plunger is filled with water and push away - that usually works amazingly well.
There are a number of things that could have clogged the toilet. I don't think that any mixture will unclog the toilet at this point. First try a plunger to see if you can dislodge what ever may be stuck in the toilet. Try a drain snake. Next step is to remove the toilet a professional may be required.
Although a mixture of baking soda, vinegar and hot water can unclog a sink drain; it may not work for a toilet. A plugger is the most effective method.
I have used "Drano" before, but I have to say, it doesn't work that well... Their advertisements make it sound like you just pour it in the toilet, and the problem is solved... but in my experience, it doesn't quite work like that.
My dad opened a clean-out valve, and all the backed-up liquid and Dran-O poured over him. They use some pretty harsh acids in that stuff, and he got some pretty bad skin burns. I can't imagine what that stuff does to the water treatment plants. posted by
