What can I expect from an old betta fish, he is five years old?

I am afraid that my betta fish will pass away soon and need to prepare my children for it.

If well fed and in a clean system that betta may live for another 5 years or more. They have been known to live 10+ years.

This can be seen as an excellent time to teach your children about death and dying. Please talk with your children beforehand, and let them know that your fish is getting old, and what may happen to him, in accordance with your belief system.

You can expect him to be less energetic, I remember my betta would just sit at the bottom of the bowl. It pretty rare they actually live to 5 years, just keep taking good care of it and hopefully it'll live even longer. :)

I'm not a fish expert nor a phychiatrist, and I don't know this helps but I know how to get through this situation because i've been there.Tell your children that the fish's dead but perform a burial or somesort of ritual.Get a new pet after a few days. They'll get over it.

When beta fish die their body curls up into a "C" shape and they float at the top of the tank.

you are probably right in your assumption that the fish may pass away soon. they typically live for about 2 or 3 years.

The average lifespan for a betta is 2 to 3 years, but once in awhile one will far surpass that. I would recommend talking to your children about it before, so that it won't be a shock for them.
