employment

Question by  weiss676 (1)

What can I do when an employee's husband continually calls his wife at work claiming it's an emergency?

I've asked him if I can take a message and it's always "urgent" or "an emergency". It never is. Maybe he forgot something at home, maybe he forgot he had an appointment. It's not the employee's fault. He even calls the business next door.

There are always emergencies, but if a husband continually calls work for his wife that is a disciplinary problem Remind the woman that personal calls should not be taken at work unless it's a true emergency. If too often, she could be repremanded.

The only thing you can do about it is to get the employee's attention. If you directly confront the husband of the employee, it may look like you're intruding with their issues so it will be best if you will talk to the employee about it first.

I would tell him that if he calls again then the number will be blocked, police will be called, and that the employee will lose her job because of him calling.

If your company does not have a policy on phone calls there is not much you can do. What seems urgent to some may not be urgent to others. You can pull the employee aside and explain to her that her husband needs to leave a message unless it is a real emergency.
