If it does not read cd roms, then perhaps there is an internal problem with your disk tray. You may want to reinstall your desk tray.

Install the CD Rom driver from the manufacturer's website. You must verify that you are installing the right driver. To find out the correct model of your CD Rom drive click on start-->right click "My Computer"-->Hardware--> Device Manager. View your drive and confirm the right model and brand for your cd rom drive

1) Check if the CD-ROM lens is clean and confirm if the CD is not damaged. 2) Verify the version on the CD and the installed version. 3) If trying to boot from CD I will check the boot up sequence in the CMOS setup and set the CDROM on priority 1.

Either your drive is dying/dead, your computer needs a reboot, or your CDs or DVDs are scratched or defective. Look at the underside of the CDs or DVDs to see if any scratches. Use windex and non scratching towels (perhaps toilet paper) to remove anything on the bottom side.

Make sure that the CD-rom drive is connected to the PC. Does it show up as a unit? Try to disconnect it and connect it again.

That is most likely your drive's problem. The operating system should not affect that. So you should buy a new drive.

Look at your CD_ROM "Make" and try to download it's drivers and install them.Drivers help XP detect your CD-ROM. However, the CD-ROM will not read DVDs. You'll need a DVD-ROM in that case. Sometimes it will depend on the way how your CD-ROM drive is connected - Slave or Master - here you need to reset the jumpers.
