First you should determine why the cat is chasing his tail. If he has fleas or skin irritation that is causing itching, you need to fix those problems. If this is play behaviour that has gotten out of hand, antidepressants or behavioural therapy may work. See a vet.

A cat that is exhibiting play behavior that is causing harm to itself can be quite alarming. The best way to solve your problem would be to go to a pet store and get some great kitty toys for your cat to play with and distract him from his tail.

Research Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome and talk to a vet about the possibility of treating your cat with anti-anxiety/anti-depressant meds if he has most of the symptoms listed. I am going through this right now, and it is awful to watch. Hugs to kitty and best of luck to you!

Make sure your cat does not have fleas. You can also use Biocaine on it's tail to stop pain and biting. You can get Biocaine from a pet supply.

A cat that is that desperate for entertainment needs a companion. Cats are happier in environments with plenty of mental and physical stimulation. If your cat is spending a lot of time alone indoors, consider getting him a friend.
