A snails insides grow into the physical shell as the shell grows. If the snail has lost all it's shell the most humane thing to do is to kill the creature in a humane fashion as it holds no life expectancy and is suffering a slow and painful death.

The creature you are seeing probably is NOT a Snail. It's most likely your average variety of garden Slug. They tend to look just like your average snail except they don't have shells.

The shell is part of the snail, and the brittle part near the head of the snail is how it grows. You can not give a snail that has a damaged shell another shell like a hermit crab. If it has no shell, it is a slug, not a snail.
