A lot of the time, the nerve will simply heal by itself over time. Refraining from heavy activity is very important, though light exercise is beneficial; medication and physical therapy may also be of help. However, a few cases may require surgery. If the pain does not dissipate within four to six weeks, consult a physician.

Sciatic nerve damage can cause lumbosacral radiopathy or back strain. It is best to see either a neurologist or an orthopedic doctor. They might send you to a pain clinic (make certain it's a good one) and they can give you epidural steroid injections which work great. Be careful with pain medication, it can become addicting. Surgery might be needed.

Many things can help ease the pain such as hot and cold compresses, acupuncture, massage and pain management medicines, but it is always best to see your doctor or health care professional before treating yourself.

Usually nerve damage is not permanent when it occurs. It may be necessary to consult with a doctor for possible surgery or other treatments such as steroid shots to the affected area in the back.

The nerve damage is a symptom of another medical condition. You need to find the underlying cause before treatment can be recommended. Sometime no treatment is needed. You can try heat or ice to area, take Advil or Motrin IB, sleep in a fetal position with a pillow between your legs. Try physical therapy. See an orthopedic doctor or neurologist.

As long as it isn't a symptom of an underlying condition, sciatic nerve damage can normally be healed by rest, controlled exercises and hot/cold compresses.
