What can I do about my child who has issues with bowel movements?

He waits and waits, refuses to go, even though he has to go, then he's in a lot of pain.

Try increasing the amount of fiber in his diet with bran muffins or grain cereals - and also make sure he is drinking at least eight glasses of water a day -- this way, even if he waits and waits to go, at least his bowel movements will be softer and less painful.

From experience I knew of a child like this. It was his way of rebelling because his parents were divorcing. His doctor said use enemas if needed.

Depending on the child's age this could be a potty training issue. A diet rich in constipating food and low in vegetables can set up a pattern of painful bowel movements that becomes a bad cycle. Whatever the situation, please discuss this right away with your child's physician.

Tell him that everyone poops and that it's good for his body to defecate; also give him lots of water and roughage to make it easier (and consider mild laxatives).

Sometimes giving him probiotics help with regulating the bowels and so does any food that will make him have a bowl movement quicker. Usually grain, chocolate, things with grease help.
