She may need privacy, so make sure her litter box is not in a high traffic area. Clean the area with an enzyme-type cleaner made for this problem.

Try putting a litter box in the area that she is using. If she uses the litter box there, start slowly moving it back to it's normal location.

Cats are very clean and this behavior indicates him trying to tell you something is wrong. Is the cats litter box kept clean? Was the litter box moved from the basement to another part of the house. Has there been some other "change in your home? An addition to the family maybe. Lastly the cat mey be sick.

Your cat may be getting sick or she may be getting revenge. Have you brought another animal into the house recently? She may be marking her territory. Otherwise clean the area well to kill the scent, put another litter box in the basement, if it continues see your vet.

She could be sick. Sometimes if an animal gets sick they will act out so that you will notice. Other times it could be them smelling other animals pooping there.
