Replacement is the only permanent solution. Shortening spark plug gaps sometimes allows the car to be driven without misfires for a short while longer. The presence of water or oil around the coil(s), boots, wires, distributor(if equipped) will shorten the life of the new components dramatically, or cause repeat failures.

I would check the various wire connections and fuses first to make sure it isn't a simpler problem. If it's the computer itself, the simplest way to fix it is to outright replace the ignition module.

The Optispark system is prone to many failures. You will need to refrain from driving the vehicle through standing water and replace the system. It will be expensive.

Well if you know the ignition module has failed then you need to remove it and install a new one.

It sounds like your engine has cracked if your ignition is failing to start. If you have the experience you should look for a crack, else mechanic.

Remove debris from the Powertrain Control Module connector surfaces. Look for damage to the module harness along with improper mating, poor wire connection. Replace the stock ignition coils.
