What can cause a low ABS neutrophil count?

Answer by  srainne (2597)

There are many possible causes of a low neutrophil count - infections, radiation, leukemia, bone marrow disease, auto-immune diseases, spleen issues, low B12 or folic acid levels, etc.

The absolute neutrophil count(ANC)in the body can be lower than the normal for one of two reasons 1. either the body isn't producing the neutrophils in normal quantities or 2. the neutrophils aren't lasting as long as they should. Potential causes for #1 range from blood cancers, to radiation, to B12 deficiency. #2 is typically auto-immune in nature.

Low vitamin B12, severe bacterial infection, certain medications, radiation, leukemia and certain types of disease can all be the cause of a low ABS neutrophil count.

Answer by  MattK (1713)

A low ABS neutrophil count may be due to chemotherapy, cancer, any number of vitamin deficiencies, radiation exposure producing bone marrow destruction and failure, severe anemia, malabsorption syndrome and anything that interferes with normal RBC maturation.
