Most people recover from a swollen optic nerve without any treatment, however treatment with intravenous corticosteroids is common. Generally a swollen optic nerve, or optic neuritis, will resolve itself within a few days to a few weeks, but it can take up to a few months. Some people develop blurred vision, and the steroids help recover vision.

Swelling of the optic nerve, or 'Papilledema', is treated differently based on the cause of the swelling. Brain tumors will need laser treatment, radiation therapy, and possible surgery. 'Pseudotumor Cerebri' can be treated with spinal taps and medications. Patients that do not respond to initial treatments may requrie additional surgery, radiation, drainage procedures, and alterations in medications dosages.

Optic neuritis is a problem with no simple solutions. There have been medications as well as several nail biting surgical procedures attempted. One procedure is to actually slice open the optic nerve in the hopes of relieving the pressure. This surgery was not widely accepted because of the risk of permanent blindness.
