Currently, the average NHL player's salary is around 2 million a year. Franchise salaries are currently limited by a hard salary cap, which changes from year to year depending on league-wide revenues earned from the previous season. NHL players usually have their contracts front or back-loaded, since there yearly salary cap hit is based on an average of yearly earnings.

The NHL operates under a salary cap structure. Their players make millions of dollars a year but nothing close to the salaries of NBA or MLB players. Elite players in the NHL make between 6-10 million a year.
