Psychological tests fall into several areas: achievement, aptitude, intelligence, neuro-psychological, occupational and personality. No test is ever completely valid or reliable because the psyche can be so complicated. Psychiatrists will use most or all these methods to determine the overall mental state of health of potential law enforcement employees.

Most states require that all police officers and trainees get psychological testing to try to screen out people who are prone to violence. MMPI's (Multiphasic Personality Inventory) is a very common testing tool that most law enforcement agencies throughout the United States and also in Canada (including Quebec) use.

My brother was a police officer in the military (air force) and he said he had to do testing for intelligence. He was always a C student in school so it couldn't be too bad if he managed to pass tjhem. That was back in the early 1980's.
