The set of rational numbers is the set of all numbers that may be written as the ratio of two integers. So, 3/5 is the ratio of three to 5 and therefore rational, while square root of two cannot be written as the ratio of two integers, and is irrational.

Rational numbers can always be expressed as a fraction with integers in both numerator and denominator. The sum, difference, and product of two rational numbers is always rational. The reciprocal of a nonzero rational number is also rational.
