Potassium is a very non dense metal that is extremely soft and can be easily cut using a knife. The color is grayish white when exposed to air due to its high reactivity but is silver when in a vaccuum or stored in oil.

Potassium will react vigorously with water and also reacts with oxygen. If it comes in contact with water it immediately starts to burn. The water in the air could be sufficient to start the reaction, depending on how moist the air is. Almost every potassium salt will dissolve in water.
