Carbs, fats and protein are all needed to keep any healthy individual going. The carbs provide energy, fat is stored as fuel for later and protein is needed to rebuild.

I am not sure exactly, as I believe it varies, but I once read that Arnold Schwarznegger, while he was a bodybuilder, used to consume 5000 calories per day.

When most people think of nutrition for Olympians, they think of the Michael Phelps diet. And they are somewhat right. Being athletes and performers, Olympians need a diet rich in calories. Energy needs to be easily expendable so simple sugars are sometimes consumed before a workout. For the long term, complex carbohydrates and proteins are key.
