Aphids can attack arborvitae. The leaves turn yellow, brown, or wilt if the damage is from aphids. Spider mites cause the leaves to turn gray. Check your local garden supply store to see if they have products to help control these pests. If this doesn't work, you could also contact an arborist, a professional who treats diseased trees for help.

Bagworms and mites can be eliminated with organic sprays or insecticides(orthene is used often). Sevin Dust is another prevention aid. In cold months animals and rodents will snack on the arborvitae, especially deer and rabbits. To eliminate the animal problem, placing a mesh fence around the tree can be a significant help.

Aphids and leafminer are common. For both of these pests, you can spray with an insecticidal soap once every 5-7 days. (Too much soap causes burning. ) Oftentimes home remedies work just as well as chemicals. So, you can mix 3 level tsp soap powder with 1 gallon of water in a spray bottle.
