The main types of snakes are pythons, boas, colubrids, and vipers. Pythons and colubrids lay eggs and boas and vipers give birth to live babies. Vipers are poisonous and illegal in most states. Colubrids such as corn snakes are easy to keep and make good pets for beginners.

Three basic types are constrictors, venomous and non-venomous. Constrictors include snakes such as boa constrictors and pythons. Some of these can be huge, such as the anaconda. Venomous snakes include rattlesnakes and cobras. One of the most deadly venomous snakes is the coral snake. You might find a non-venomous snake like a garter snake in your own back yard.

Snakes may be venomous or non-venomous and most are classified as being in the colubridae, boidae, elapidae, viperidae or hydrophiidae families. Colubridae is the largest family with mostly non-venomous snakes. Boidae are the constricting snakes. All snakes in the elapidae and viperidae families are venomous. The hydrophilidae family is made up of sea snakes which may be venomous or non-venomous.
