Most people say that spices go bad after about a year. But some people just use their sense of smell and taste to check whether a spice needs replacing.

From what I have seen spices don't actually expire. Oil will become rancid so you'll want to watch out if your spices have oil in them, such as spiced dipping oil for bread. Otherwise, aged spices just lose their flavor. Some might get moisture in their container and clump together, but you can still use it.

The expiration dates for spices are 2 to 3 years for ground and 4 to 5 years for whole spices in the jars.
