While there's no universally accepted list of government types, they can be sorted into two main categories: democracies and non-democracies. The non-democracy category can be further divided into subtypes like communism, as practiced in China, military dictatorship, as practiced in North Korea, and absolute monarchy, as practiced in Saudi Arabia.

Republic is the type of government we have in the United States. We take advantage of our democracy. Others countries are not so fortunate. Some have a dictatorship like the old Iraq, socialism like Norway and totalitarian like China.

the main two types are democratic and authoritarian. Most European countries are democratic. So is the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Soviet Union, Syria, and China are authoritarian. Another division in governemnts is the split between federated and unitary systems. Federated systems use multiple, independent, and geographically overlapping governments. The United States, Mexico, and Germany are federated.
