In terms of law enforcement, detectives are investigators. They investigate crime, put the pieces of a puzzle together and determine if a crime has been committed and by whom. Homicide, vice, fraud, sex crimes, bank fraud and other areas use detectives/investigators.

The term detective is broad in nature. You can work as a private detective solving small cases. You can also join law enforcement agencies solving crime puzzles; finding out who has committed the crime.

The basic job is the same, but the departments are different. Some cities have a major crimes unit that does all felony investigations. Others split sexual offenses, murder, burglary into separate divisions. Check with the department you want to work at to find out how their departments are structured.
