Most softbills such as canaries, finches, and doves have pleasant sounds that are not disturbing, or bothersome to neighbors. Small parrots are generally quieter than medium or large parrots, so budgies or cockatiels are a good choice, however each bird is an individual and even a tiny budgie can have an ear piercing repetitive scream.

Macaws and cockatoos are both very large and very noisy. Of the parrots, the African Grey and Eclectus are the quietest; however they require more care than the smaller birds. Cockatiels are fairly quiet, can be very tame and loving. The males can learn to say a few words. Canaries are quiet, except when they sing, but cannot be tamed.

Most pet birds talk and sing so knowing that before you make your selection is wise. I would stay away from the parakeet's and the parrot's. They seem to be the loudest. A nice pair of love birds or a male canary would be a wonderful choice. Cockatiel's are my favorite as they are quick learners.

If you are looking for quiet, stay away from parrots and macaws. Love birds, canaries, and parakeets are all fairly quiet birds. Doves are quiet, except for their cooing in the morning which can be a little annoying at times. Not very noisy, just consistant. Go to a pet store that sells birds, listen to them before purchasing.

Parrotlets are fairly quiet. They are parakeet size so they don't have a big voice and usually only talk when they have a reason.

Several types of birds can serve as pets. Parakeets and canaries are small while parrots, minah birds, and cockatoos are larger birds which can mimic human speech.

I suggest doves, pigeons, canaries or finches. Generally, the smaller the bird the less intelligent and less vocal. There are exceptions, of course but not in the above listed.
