The biggest factor against the death penalty is a moral issue. You could be putting an innocent person to death. It is VERY expensive to carry out the death penalty also.

People argue that the death penalty does not prevent the crimes for which it is the punishment. Some argue that millions and millions of tax dollars are spent on the appeals for such a case, all with no benefit to the general public.

Arguments include that it is barbaric, that it doesn't serve to deter violent crime, that it is expensive (for the tax payers) and that there are those condemned to die who are actually innocent.

The death penalty is a final act that cannot be reversed. If it is later proved that the executed person wasn't guilty, it is impossible to get justice for him.
