Right off the top of the list is the Golden Retriever, and then the Lab. German Shepherds are loyal and patient, and actually the Staffordshire Terrier, known as the Anerican Pitbull is a loving, loyal dog, but often too strong for children and too protective. Poodles are smart, patient, and hypo-allergenic.

Usually it's better to get a bigger breed if you have small children. Kids can easily hurt a small dog by accident, and small dogs tend to be a lot nippier than big dogs.

Golden Retrievers are best for families with small children. They have the tolerance of labs but not happy. They can usually tolerate being tugged on as small children tend to do. They are also very loyal and smart animals, which is why they are chosen as service animals. They have a wonderful temperament as well, and usually love everyone.

Ideally, small dogs are the best for small children. That way, the dog does not purposely or unintentionally overpower the kid. Well-behaved pit bulls CAN be an option, however.
