A stand alone computer is very fast because you can streamline it to operate only the functions needed. Once it meets user's needs, its not necessary to upgrade the Operating system or programs. Hardware failures can force a user to upgrade, but its possible to get free hardware. Modern computers connected to the internet have to protect themselves from insecure data.

A stand-alone computer offers more performance, expandability, and customization versus a notebook at comparable price points, leading to a better gaming or A/V experience when properly equipped.

Having a computer disconnected from other comupters means you cannot get viruses, worms, etc. unless you put them in via physically installing something infected (like a burned copy of a bugged game. And you can save a lot of memory not having antivirus or networking prgrams installed and running.

The advantages of a stand alone computer are that it does not need any other computer or machinery to operate and be used. It seems that not-stand alone computers have some part of the OS on a central server (so that your files are accesible from anywhere).
