Do a "Wild West" theme. Use old lanterns as lamp bases. Buy a bed that is made of distressed wood. Hang toy rifles on the walls.

If he's old enough, let your son help you decorate. He will know what he wants better than anyone. If he's still very young, put up prints of firetrucks and astronauts. If it's affordable, give him a bed shaped as a racecar.

Go "cheap" and redecorate often, according to his tastes of the moment. My son has had a Thomas room, currently has a Transformers room and is about to move on - Target has great prices on bedding, pillows and other bric a brac that make it so you can change the whole theme of the room for less than $100.

American flag colours and theme are nice, as are planes and cars although that may not be as unique. Try for a playful Disney theme.
