Your vehicle may be in 4-wheel drive and they all make a clunking noise when going into reverse. It could also be a bad U-Join on the drive shaft.

If the noise only happens while in reverse, it's most likely some sort of transmission problem. Take the vehicle to a transmission specialist mechanic and have them do a diagnostics. If they tell you it's a big problem, take it to another place for a second opinion to be sure.

Well that sounds like you have a drivetrain issue. Inspect the running gear for worn or loose components paying special attention to the universal joint.

There could be a few things that can cause a clunking noise. Bad U-joints can cause a noise in reverse, but will also cause a noise going forward. Something wrong in the brakes can also cause that noise. A bad engine or transmission mount could also cause that noise like that.

If you are hearing different types of clunking noises coming from inside I would check your transmission for serious problems.
