Ensure that your muscles are always warmed up before you attempt any heavy lifts. Always try to keep your back straight to prevent injury. Maybe use wrist straps to assist in your grip. It is worth practicing the simple shoulder and back exercises as well as compound over head exercise to ensure you are comfortable in lifting in this motion.

Overhead lifting should be done with a weight lifting belt to protect your back. For a strong man completion, you should try compound lifts that require the use of multiple muscle groups. These include clean and jerk, squat thrusts and Turkish get-ups. Also, you should strengthen your legs by doing squats and lunges.

First and foremost, overhead weight lifting could be very dangerous and is important that a spotter is present. Do not lift too heavy to begin with, gradually work your way up, for you might pull a muscle.

It is very important that you do not hesitate while performing an overhead lift. Once you lift the weights from the floor you should flip them up to your chin and push them over your head in one fluid motion. When lifting an extreme amount of weight overhead, any hesitation can result in a loss of control.

Before engaging in any type of overhead lifting you need to make sure your core muscles, especially you abdominal and lower back muscles are up to the task. Also proper form is key to utilizing as many muscles as you can for the press, instead of relying soley on shoulder strength.
