For a formal party, you want to keep decorations elegant and simple. Lighted candles, simple balloons and maybe a few streamers are nice. Make pretty centerpieces for guest tables like a beautiful flower vase filled with the couple's favorites and fill the walls with old photos of the couple if it's an anniversary party.

Black and white is a good color scheme for a formal party. Also red roses and candles are a nice touch. The chairs should have cloth covers on them. Photos of the person are also tasteful-especially if they are done in black and white. Napkin holder rings are also recommended

For a formal party you want to leave it simple, but elegant. Don't over do it with too many vibrant colors that scream out look at me. Neutral colors will do for an occasion such as a 50th anniversary party. Having nice table clothes and centerpieces would be a nice touch.

Above all else, keep it simple. Decorate using gold or their wedding colors. Don't serve food on plastic or paper. Use flowers and framed photos of the couple as centerpieces.

Make sure that you have plenty of fine silverware and tableware. You don't need to do a whole lot of decorating for a formal party. Just make sure that your house is very clean and looks perfect. Borrow dishes from friends if you need to. Go the extra mile to get special cheese knives and other things like that.

Stay classy. Nice, white mantles for the tables. Have silverware, nice cups, fine wine ... sort of how they would do in a wedding.
