Many famous novelists use this standard tip, they write the ending first and then plot the rest of the novel around it. Also get some magazines and research the locale with newspapers or articles to get a feel for the area. Send away to the chamber of commerce and try and get an authentic touch for the dialect and customs.

It's your novel, your story, your responsibility. There are loads of books filled with suggestions and ideas. Check out "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" by Stephen King. It is perhaps the best book every written on the art and craft of fiction.

Write detailed descriptions of each main character. Break the story up into sections and write a detailed outline about each section. When you look at that outline, break up the action into small manageable instances that logically fit together and designate them as chapters. Think about the purpose is for each one in terms of character development or plot device.

There are two basic ways to plot a novel. One is to write out a plot and the other is to create compelling characters and see what happens when they interact. Doing something in between works well--create interesting characters and then from the conflict between them plot the novel.
