First you must choose an area with great sunlight and drainage. An area where grass can be left unmowed until foliage has matured ideal. The edge of woods or even hillside are good for them

When you plant the bulbs in the fall, plant them with Cayenne pepper and, in fact, any kind of rodent deterrent you can think of. Squirrels and other rodents are your worst enemy when it comes to having a great springtime display, because they eat the bulbs for the moisture during winter.

Tulips only grow during the winter. When planting make sure the bulb tip is facing up, and the hole is at least 6 inches deep and water regularly.

Depending on your climate zone, Dutch tulips are planted in the fall before the soil freezes. If in the far south, they need a cold treatment before they will bloom. Plant in soil that isn't soggy. Most tulips are best the first year and then fade in quality.
