What are some tips for coping with illness?

My mother is having a hard time coping.

I believe the key is to find a new activity with a positive goal, within your physical abilities. Join a support group, volunteer at a center, learn to cook a new meal every week, crochet a blanket, take painting lessons. Massage and exercises can help some conditions, and just having a counselor listen can make a huge difference.

Try to find something enjoyable she can do - a craft such as knitting or beading or painting - painting flower pots is easy and relaxing and doesn't require great skill; books or magazine or audio-books she might enjoy. Try to focus on something enjoyable at least once a day and take things one day at a time.

Have her do things she absolutely loves or has always wanted to do. If you keep the mind and/or body as busy as can be, it can help take the stress off coping with illnesses.
