Colonies and settlements were firmly entrenched along the Atlantic coast line, an agrarian style economy was instituted. The native inhabitants were pushed back from their homeland, destroyed through warfare or eliminated by contagious disease they could not respond to. Slavery, an institution that was to plague the developing colonies was also introduced at this time.
